Do you have a antivirus program installed? No? You should get one! There are a lot of free antiviruses out there. Not all of them offer good protection. Some of them are even trying to scam you by giving you false positives. I have found a few real antiviruses that are free and do work. I will give you a short review of ClamWin antivirus, an antivirus that even has a portable version, a nice little extra that can be very helpful sometimes!
ClamWin antivirus
Features

ClamWin antivirus is an antivirus that comes with an easy installer, scanning scheduler, standalone virus scanner, Windows Explorer context menu Integration, addin to Microsoft Outlook and automatic virus database updates so you are protected against the latest threats, a very important thing.
I can give you an example of this. A friend of mine an antivirus installed. He came to me and said his PC was infected by a virus and that his antivirus couldn’t find it. We went home to him and started up the computer. His antivirus-license had expired, that made his computer vulnubare to new threats. Having an antivirus is one thing, having one with virus database updates is another thing. So if you have an antivirus with an expired license you should either go and buy a new license or uninstall the old antivirus and install a free one, like ClamWin or AVG Anti-Virus Free.
The downside of ClamWin antivirus is that it doesn’t have an on-access real-time scanner. The developers say that it is going to be implented soon, so fingers crossed. If you decide to use ClamWin antivirus you should get used to scan suspected files manually before you open them. Not a big issue if you ask me.
A very nice feature of ClamWin antivirus is that it is open source, the result of this is that portableapps.com made a portable version of it. I find that very useful when helping others. It means that you don’t even have to install the program to use it!!!
A short summary:
- Portable version
- Open Source
- Works good on Windows, not slowing down your computer.
- Fresh virus definitions
- No on-access real-time scanner yet
